Ambon, Home to a Strange Little Underwater World

October 2025, back to Indonesia. First stop: the island of Ambon, in the Moluccas. The objective: an underwater photo safari in «macro» mode.
Melibe coleman. Romblon, Philippines, March 2017)

Melibe colemani, the Grail of nudibranchs

His name: Melibe colemani. This small sea animal is the star of Romblon, Philippines. Divers are ready to travel thousands of miles to admire this strange sea slug!
Nudibranch. Alor, Indonesia. July 2012.

Bunch of nudibranchs

Sea slugs, called "nudibranchs", abound in Indonesia, and especially in Alor. Small gallery-photos.
Rhinopias. Alor, Indonesia. July 2012.

The underwater treasures of Alor

Underwater, we do not look only in the blue. In the archipelago of Alor, Indonesia, it is by scrutinizing the bottom that we find treasures.
Nudibranch. Maumere Bay, Flores, Indonesia. July 2011.

Nudibranches and quirks in Maumere

I take you underwater, in the east of Flores, Indonesia, for a special nudibranch sequence, in Maumere Bay.
Nudibranch. Sulawesi, Indonesia. July 2010.

Nudibranchs forever

It is one of the treasures of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, to discover underwater. The delicate beauty of nudibranchs, these small sea slugs with shimmering colors, is a delight!
Ornate ghost fish. (Sulawesi, Indonesia, July 2010)

The small critters of the reef

In Indonesia, the word "biodiversity" makes sense. Here in the Sea of Celebes, the underwater world teems with bizarre and fascinating creatures, often tiny.
Soon Sulawesi

Soon Sulawesi

A new start, very soon ... Three years after my first trip to Sulawesi, I return. On the program: Bangka Island, Lembeh and the Toraja country.
My slug in Water Searchers.

My slug in Water seekers

It's in the latest Chercheurs d'eau! In two columns, at the top of the page, it's my slug. A sea slug photographed this summer in Sipadan, Malaysia (Borneo). Anthony Leydet, a specialist in marine biology, devotes a passionate article to these charming creatures in the November issue.
Mantas and nudibranchs

Mantas and nudibranchs

Guilhem, my dive buddy in Derawan (Borneo), was kind enough to send me two underwater videos he made this summer in the sea of Celebes.
Crocodile fish. Derawan Island (Borneo, Indonesia, July 2009).

Derawan under water

Back to Derawan ... under the surface. The reef of the island, even if it is not the most spectacular of the sites of the corner, deserves some dives. The little creatures that I adore abound. But watch out for diving safety ...
Nudibranch. Similan Island, Malaysia. July 2009.

Nudibranch Festival

I'm one of those divers who can spend long minutes enthralled by a nudibranch. These delicate little sea slugs abound in Mabul and Sipadan.
The eyes in the blue

The eyes in the blue

The Perhentians are an excellent choice for a gentle "return to the fins". Shallow dives, generally without too much current. And lots of nice little creatures to flash around.
Nudibranch. Similan Islands, Thailand.

The Similan underwater

Now I'm making a bit of progress sorting out the photos... I've just put online my underwater images taken during the Similan diving cruise. In the absence of the much hoped-for "big" encounters (mantas, whale sharks), I've concentrated on the "small". Nudibranch lovers will appreciate!
Koh Lipe: underwater photos

Koh Lipe: underwater photos

I haven't had much time to myself since I got back... I'm just starting to sort through my photos from Thailand. And I can't believe I've managed to bring back so many images, despite the vagaries of my camera. To begin with, here are my underwater photos of Koh Lipe.
Moray. Koh Lipe, Thailand. March 2009.

Koh Lipe on land and underwater

Three days I've been on Koh Lipe, a tiny island in the very south of Thailand, on the edge of the Malaysian border. My camera is dead, but I've still got pictures. That's right! Solidarity and the D-system came into their own.
It's all right! Back to the Sea of Fantasy, the boat of Eden Divers. (Similan Islands, Thailand, February 2009)

The cruise makes bubbles at Similan

I have just returned from a four-day dive cruise to the fabulous Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. Here are some pictures, above and underwater.
Back to Island Retreat. (Togian Islands, Sulawesi, Indonesia, July 2008.)

Earthquake under water

This is one of the strangest dives I've done. Feel the earth tremble ... under water, it's really a funny thing. It was in Indonesia, in Sulawesi, in July 2007. In the Togian Islands, exactly.
Diving on the wreck of Liberty. (Tulamben, Bali, July 2008)

Dive without getting wet in Bali

Yes, I bring you (again) under the surface ... To finish with the wreck of the Liberty in Bali, I propose below a small series of underwater photos.
Dream diving: Pemuteran and Menjangan

Dream diving: Pemuteran and Menjangan

I arrived on Tuesday in Pemuteran, a village on the north coast, just west of Bali. In this area of arid mountains, bordered by black sand beaches, all the activity of the village is turned towards the protection of the coral reef.
Squille. Lovina Beach, Bali. July 2008.

First bubbles in Lovina

I'm reconciled with Lovina Beach! Thanks to two very nice dives, a traditional ceremony facing the sea and a splendid sunset.
Nudibranch. Heron Ardeadoris (Ardeadoris egretta). Togian Islands, Sulawesi, Indonesia. July 2007.

Diving in the Togian Islands

The Togian dives seemed less spectacular than those of Bunaken or Lembeh, during this July 2007 trip: coral more damaged, life less abundant. Yet, taking his time, we discover a lot of treasures.
Toad fish (antennal). Philippines, March 2008.

The fabulous underwater critters of Dauin and Apo

The wealth of submarine sites in Dauin (Negros) and Apo made a strong impression. Life abounds there and the beauty of the coral, hard and soft, farting with health, is properly stunning.
The beach of Dauin. In the background, the island of Apo. The sky clears on the horizon ... (Negros, Philippines, February 2008)

Dauin, a paradise for divers

Spectacular dives at Dauin and Apo Island! The corner is teeming with life and sites allow you to alternate dive-muck, drop offs, reefs ...
A couple of nudibranchs in action ... (Siquijor, Philippines, February 2008)

Would you like some more nudibranchs?

Since I've been in Siquijor, I've been diving and snorkelling every day... Yesterday, our guide, Neal, took us out to explore the seabed at Salagdoong Beach, which I had already explored on the landward side during my motorcycle trip last week.
Snuggled against the reef, a "knit-striped" snake. (Sogod Bay, Leyte, Philippines, February 2008)

The small underwater fauna of Leyte in pictures

For lack of whale shark, in Sogod Bay (Leyte), I turned to the little people of the reef... And there's plenty to do and observe!
The wind blows on the dead coral beach of Sogod Bay Scuba Resort. (Leyte, Philippines, February 2008)

Sogod Bay, the Whale Shark Bay

First stage of my Philippine journey: the southern tip of the island of Leyte. For some dives in Sogod Bay, in the hope of crossing the path of a whale shark .
My guide Salim, looking for the little beasts stuck on the fall of Bunaken. Sulawesi, Indonesia, July 2007.

Bunaken: Drops... to fall!

These first two days in Bunaken have been going at full speed. The dives are up to my expectations: drop-offs covered with a variety of incredible coral. Side fauna, all the tropical panoply colorful is there.
On the pontoon of Mabul, the little gypsies of the sea welcome divers. (Borneo, Malaysia. July 2006)

Gypsies of the sea and soldiers in arms

The islands around Sipadan are unknown and yet they are worth seeing. I dive there almost every day until the end of the week, waiting for my turn to go to Sipadan.
In search of nudibranchs ...

In search of nudibranchs ...

Nudibranchs are the sea cousins of land slugs. Their gills are exposed, naked, hence their name ...
