Manta rays of Komodo

The more I dive, the better it is! I have never seen as many manta rays as last year. The proof, with this new video, brought back from Komodo National Park (Indonesia), where I was in July 2011.

A dose of mantas against the cold

You remember my princess boat ? And the Manta Ray Who Cuckoo ? Are you tired of the cold and the snow?

Come on, I'll take you back to Indonesia, in 27 ° C water, in the heart of Komodo National Park. Over there, mantas rays whirl gracefully and forget everything ...

Here are pictures brought back from Karang Makassar's website:

(Sigh…)

    1. Yes, that's what fascinates me most about manta rays. The way they swim, like a bird flying... Their movements look slow, but in reality, each "wing beat" is very powerful and propels them really fast. Impossible to follow them while webbing. 🙄

    1. Not at all. This is the Karang Makassar site, a real manta expressway... We were lucky, I must say. For an hour, they kept coming and coming.

Manta rays are totally harmless, with no venomous stings or bites. Unlike their smaller cousins, the sting-rays, which burrow into the sand and can inflict painful stings. I had a painful experience of this in the Derawan archipelago, near Borneo, in 2009 (after swimming with manta rays). I'll tell you about it at the end of this post:

    1. Yes, it's fantastic, magical, incredible... I still can't believe how lucky I was to have been there, at the right time!!! 🙂

  1. Sigh, sigh .. We also compensate for the lack of sun, heat and travel by watching videos and continuing (tirelessly) to sort and classify photos (mantas among others). Addicted? do not see ...

    1. I was really lucky, then. I saw them twice on this Komodo dive cruise, at two different sites. But the most spectacular was Karang Makassar, where I shot the images for this video.

  2. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm having a few problems connecting to the Vimeo systemo....Watching the video takes a little more time and patience, and the impression of restful indolent slowness that this ballet of mantas gives is disrupted by these interruptions in sound and image. 🙁
Nevertheless, it's very beautiful, I like it a lot 😉

    1. The Vimeo server isn't the fastest, and if your Internet connection is a little slow, the video may take a long time to load. In this case, you need to press the pause button, then wait for the gray loading bar to reach the end, and only then restart playback by clicking on the "play" button again.
      😉

    2. I followed the advice; very long bar to load, and at the end, nothing! Might as well watch the split video! 😆

  3. Okay, your video is simply excellent and leaves me dreaming. I also stumbled across your blog while looking for dives on Koh Lipe. So you've answered my question. Obviously, after Sulawesi, Komodo and so many others, it's going to be hard to compete, but do you know if there are any good dives on the Bulon Lae side? What do you use to make your videos?
Thanks again for a great stress relieving blog!!!! 🙄

    1. I think Koh Bulon itself is worth a visit, but as for the diving sites nearby, I have no idea, I must admit...

I realize my videos, since 2010, with my SLR, the Canon Eos 7D. I'm making progress, little by little... 😉

I've been promising, for ages, to get down to a little review of my impressions of the 7D, but I still haven't done anything... Anyway, I love it!!!! If on top of that it's a stress reliever, it's perfect!!!!
      🙄

  4. Since you'll be going back to Bali soon, it reminds me that on the island of Ceningan, there's a great spot full of manta rays near Jumping Rock. I haven't had the chance to go diving, but seeing a stingray at 20m is still pretty magical!

  5. I dedicate this magnificent piece of paradise that you offer us to my brother, who left too early. The word is superfluous ...
The vibrations are magical, don't stop, thank you.
