Whatever, it's a game.
The kids are not afraid of anything and especially not of foreign tourists who wander around the village, camera slung over their shoulders. "Hello! What's your name?" The most daring girls come to start a conversation, learned in the English textbook.
They were not taught to be wary. They were not told not to talk to strangers. "Photo! Photo!"
In any case, there are not really strangers on this tiny Indonesian island. The pale faces freshly landed from Borneo in a speedboat are immediately welcomed, spotted, questioned. By adults and children.
"Where do you come from?
- Saya orang perancis..."
We tourists also repeat the words we learned in our travel conversation books. The kids' faces light up. They jostle to be in the foreground of the photo.
Digital technology is a wonderful and formidable invention. Sometimes, parents, when they are near, even push their children in front of the camera. Not a little proud of their offspring.
Another picture? All right, then.
Again? Again!... "Lagi! Lagi!" ask the kids in chorus.
I spent about ten days in Derawan, in July 2009. During my stay, I learned to leave the camera hidden in the bottom of the bag.
The kids are still crisp and playful. But even more when they play with each other or make fun of me without worrying about posing for the famous picture.

@Anne Marie: The daily life of the people of the small village of Derawan is certainly very simple, but not miserable as far as I could judge in a few days. In any case, the children (and their parents) seem happy. And the passing tourists with their cameras are still an attraction that provokes a lot of laughter, smiles and joyful greetings... Let's hope it lasts!
