The place is certainly still beautiful, <strong>but in terms of tourist numbers, it is perhaps even worse than in 2007<\/strong>... See my new photos in this article \u279c\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/petitesbullesdailleurs.fr\/en\/phi-phi-leh-lile-belle-20110321\/\">Phi Phi Leh, the beautiful island<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mynotice\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-kb-palette-3-color\">Update 2022:<\/mark> Maya Bay, suffocated by overtourism<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/leditiondusoir\/data\/22028\/reader\/reader.html#!preferred\/1\/package\/22028\/pub\/31855\/page\/8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was closed in 2018 by the Thai authorities<\/a>The explosion in tourism from China, in particular, which now accounts for almost a third of visitors to Thailand, has not helped matters. Thailand was planning to reopen Maya Bay in 2021, but it will now be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouest-france.fr\/leditiondusoir\/2022-01-03\/voici-a-quoi-ressemble-la-plage-de-maya-bay-en-thailande-fermee-aux-touristes-pendant-trois-ans-de6688c9-2916-4c73-ae2e-42e8eb58724b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1<sup>er<\/sup>\u00a0January 2022<\/a>by limiting the number of people. To protect ecosystems, <strong>quotas are effective<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/petitesbullesdailleurs.fr\/en\/plongeurs-securite-sipadan-20131215\/\">we saw it in Sipadan in Malaysia<\/a>. Quite a good initiative, then. <br><br>In fact, two to three months after Maya Bay was closed, the sharks returned: <strong>\"We've gone from 5,000 tourists to about 60 sharks.\"<\/strong> sums up a Thai marine biologist, specialist of the issue, interviewed in a report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetvinfo.fr\/monde\/environnement\/video-en-thailande-la-plage-de-maya-bay-un-paradis-desormais-interdit_3497159.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">for <em>Correspondent<\/em><\/a> on France 2. The association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanquest.global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ocean Quest<\/a> has begun replanting coral \"cuttings\" in the area. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetvinfo.fr\/monde\/asie\/video-il-redonne-vie-au-corail-en-le-collant-aux-rochers-a-la-glu_3497427.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by fixing them to the glue<\/a>, with success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But well... At each stop, we splashed in the water with mask and snorkel or went for a kayak ride!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pure tourist idleness in the sunshine. (Thailand, January 2007)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diving in Hin Daeng and Hin Muang<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we're diving again, this time at the renowned sites of Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, an hour and a half speed-boat ride from Koh Phi Phi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were hoping to see some manta rays, which can be seen in the area at this time of year, but no such luck. They didn't deign to cross our path underwater... Too bad! The underwater fauna remains abundant and spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big fat moray stoically supported the light of my flash for a tight portrait.
