July 26, 2009. I left Derawan and its archipelago today. I realized this dream I had since the beginning of this Indonesian journey in Borneo<\/a> : swim with manta rays<\/a>, in the waters of Sangalaki<\/a> !<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

First of all (because I get asked this question all the time): no, large manta rays don't sting. They do NOT have a stinger, and are totally harmless (unlike small stingrays, but I'll tell you more about that below...).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'll start by giving you a few images of those magical moments with manta rays, in the waters off Sangalaki (an island in the Derawan archipelago near Borneo, on the Indonesian side)... These graceful giants are powerful and fast. You've got to be on your toes not to lose sight of them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
